To a large bowl, add all ingredients, EXCEPT the bread and margarine, and whisk until blended.
Transfer to a square Pyrex dish or another container that is easier to dip the bread in.
Add bread and let it sit in the mixture for 15-30 seconds, then flip and let it soak as well.
Heat nonstick pan over medium heat.
Add oil or vegetable butter or margarine.
Fry marinated bread until brown on each side.
Sprinkle brown sugar on hot French toast as soon as it is removed from pan.
Serve with syrup, jam, fruit, peanut crumbles, and/or peanut butter.
